Title: Program Reminder -- A. Doak Barnett Memorial Essay Contest on Sino-American Relations

The National Committee on U.S.-China Relations is pleased to announce the fourth annual A. Doak Barnett Memorial Essay Contest on Sino-American Relations.  The competition has been established to honor the memory of A. Doak Barnett, an internationally recognized scholar, devoted teacher and loyal friend of the National Committee from its founding in 1966 to his death in 1999.

The contest is open to American and Chinese graduate students who are either currently enrolled in a degree program or have completed their degree requirements in 2004.  Awards of $1,000 each will be made to the best American and Chinese essayists, respectively.  The National Committee will publish the winning and honorable mention essays in its Newsletter, Notes from the National Committee, and on its website.  Last year’s winning essays can be found on the National Committee website (www.ncuscr.org).

This year’s essay topic is the following:  Please write about any issue of consequence in U.S. - China relations, and what might be done to address

this issue.

Essays will be evaluated on the basis of demonstrated understanding of the issues, quality of argument or analysis, and writing style.   The panel of judges includes Mrs. Jeanne Barnett and a group of distinguished China scholars:  Hao Yufan (Colgate University), David M. Lampton (School of Advanced International Studies, Johns Hopkins University), Cheng Li (Woodrow Wilson Center), Lucian Pye (Massachusetts Institute of Technology), Anne Thurston (School of Advanced International Studies, Johns Hopkins University), Wang Jisi (Director, Institute of International Strategic Studies, Central Party School), and Zi Zhongyun (formerly with the Chinese Academy of Social Science).
