As the new Co-Masters of Eliot House, we wish to extend the warmest of welcomes to all new and returning students. We moved into our residence only a few days ago and are indeed still struggling with stray belongings, piles of boxes and a disoriented cat. Nevertheless, Anna, our two children, Giulio and Piero, and I are all delighted to have joined the Eliot community. Having lived here in J-11 in the Spring 1994, we consider this a bit of a homecoming, and look forward to getting to know all of you in the course of the coming year.
Returning students will notice that some major changes have taken place during the summer. As expected, the former Co-Masters have left the riverside for the countryside and Harvard Square for Harvard, Mass. We thank them again for all the dedication they have put into the House over the years of their mastering, and wish them and their children all happiness and success in their new life.
The departure of our former Senior Tutor, Margaret Bruzelius, was an unexpected and severe blow to all of us. Her wisdom, wonderful good humor and colorful hosiery will be sorely missed everywhere in the House. We thank her for all her thoughtful work on behalf of Eliot's students, we warmly congratulate her on her new appointment, and wish her every success with it. Sorry as we are at her going, we find consolation in the thought that for the coming year, while she will be "Deaning" away at Smith College all week, Margaret will be in the House with her family at least at weekends.
We are fortunate that, while not completely losing our previous Senior Tutor, we have acquired a new one, Oona Ceder. Trained in Sweden, California and the Radcliffe Quad, Oona has already taken up the challenge of her position with great dynamism and efficiency. We welcome her and assure her of our unstinting support.
Last but not least, we welcome our five new resident tutors: Mike Canfield, Matt Gentzkow, Isabelle Sajous, Gustavo Secchi, and Pete Wilson. They come to add in quality and quantity to a team that is our most precious resource. We salute all our tutors as the true bedrock of this House, our link with the past and the reason for our confidence in the future.
In the midst of so much change we are very fortunate that Sue Weltman and Janey Bosch remain in the House Office as helpful and in as good humor as ever, and that Francisco Medeiros and his staff continue to look after the House with such care and efficiency. We are personally grateful to all of them for the tremendous support they have given us during our recent move. Our experience confirms what we had heard from students and tutors alike: Eliot House would be a much lesser place without their loyalty and hardwork.
In the seventy years of its existence Eliot House has seen many changes. Masters, tutors, and above all students, have contributed to making it a place with which to be proud to be associated. We might be biased, but we are convinced that it is the most handsome of all Harvard Houses. We also want it to become the most intellectually vibrant and interesting. To this end, we believe that students should be directly involved in the decisions that affect their life in the House, and look forward to establishing the framework by which this may be achieved.
We wholeheartedly support our students' intellectual and scholarly pursuits. Our love of learning is what ultimately led us all here and now binds us together beyond individual differences. At the same time, we strongly encourage our students to actively participate in the cultural, artistic and sporting life of the House. The sum of these activities, physical as well as intellectual, will determine the climate in which we live and work. We also wish to foster all contributions to public service outside the House. Our very privilege makes us aware of our need to do the utmost toward improving the lot of our not-so-fortunate neighbors. Students' initiatives in any of these areas are essential for the fulfilment of the House's aims, and we and our tutors are willing to guide and support them with enthusiasm.
We are very excited at the prospect of this coming academic year, and are ready to put every effort into making it as rewarding and enriching an experience as possible for all of us. We are confident that we can count on your support in this endeavour, for we all know that the well-being and the success of our community depend entirely on the day-to-day contribution of each one of us.
