    HACIA Democracy
    Eric Werker haciadem@hcs.harvard.edu
We are a Harvard staff of 23 students who run a government-simulation conference for high-school students from all over the Americas. The Harvard Association Cultivating Inter-American (HACIA) Democracy was founded in 1994 in order to strengthen the concept of democracy in a region historically plagued by political instability. HACIA staff members join a diverse group of young leaders in an exploration of creative, democratic solutions to some of the most pressing issues facing the Western Hemisphere. Over Spring Break 2000, these discussions will be occurring in Costa Rica. All students are welcome to apply, and should contact us in March to join the next year's staff.

    Harvard International Relations Council
    Mustafa Siddiqui hirc@hcs.harvard.edu
The Harvard International Relations Council, or IRC, is the largest entirely student-run organization on campus. With over 400 members, the IRC serves as the umbrella organization for six programs, all designed to promote international awareness and ed ucation. Whether you are interested in working on an internationally distributed publication, helping run a Model UN conference for 2000 delegates, or teaching high school students about a particular international topic, the IRC has a program that will sa tisfy your hunger for international affairs. The IRC comprises of the best and oldest Model United Nations conferences, the Harvard International Review which is an internationally acclaimed and distributed publication, Intercollegiate Model United Nations which allows Harvard students to represent nations at other conferences, Model Security Council a one-day simulation each September, and hitting closer to home the Harvard Program for International Education teaches area high school students about world affairs. Members of the IRC also find the organization a fantastic social outlet where over 400 undergraduates meet and interact on both a professional and social level. Interspersed throughout the year are events such as the fall Advocate Party, the Annual Semi-Formal, a tailgate party at the Harvard-Yale game, as well as several in-office functions. Many of the best friendships formed by IRC members are with fellow members of the organization. The IRC also works closely with other student organizations that have similar aims. For instance, the Center for International Affairs (CFIA) and the IRC co-host two coffee and desert functions with CFIA fellows. The IRC also co-sponsors speakers at th e Kennedy School with the Institute of Politics. In addition, the IRC gives grants annually to student groups who demonstrate a sincere desire to promote international awareness and education. This past year, the IRC gave grants to such organizations as the Woodbridge Society, the Philippine Forum, Amnesty International, RAZA, the Society of Arab Students, and the Asian American Association (AAA). Each of the six programs that comprise the IRC provides interested students with a host of opportunities. In addition, there are positions available within Central, the coordinating body of the entire organization. As always, no experience is necessary to participate in any IRC program. We hope you will join us!!!
    Harvard Model Congress
    Anna Su (bsu@fas), Ben Lanson (lanson@fas) hmc@hcs.harvard.edu
Each year, Harvard Model Congress hosts the premier simulation of the U.S. government anywhere in the world. In February, over 1200 high school students from around the nation will converge on downtown Boston to simulate all branches of government, from the Cabinet to the Federal Courts to the House and Senate. HMC also simulates press coverage of the government, with a sophisticated Press Corps simulation that includes two daily newspapers and a nightly TV broadcast. In its fifteenth anniversary year, HMC has added the Presidential Campaign program to allow students to learn about and simulate the presidential campaign season, which will be in full swing as the conference takes place. Held at the Sheraton Boston, the four day HMC conference involves a full year of preparation from over 150 Harvard students. Harvard staffers perform various roles at the conference, moderating congressional committees, serving as Supreme Court justices and directing lobbyists and reporters in their daily tasks. It will be a great year for HMC for students and staffers alike; look for posters around campus for the HMC intro meeting.
